Planning a UAV LiDAR Mapping Project in Ontario: What to Include in Your Quote Request

Oct 7
2 min read

A useful UAV LiDAR mapping quote starts with the decisions your team needs to make. Baxter UAV Solutions provides terrain mapping and 3D data for mining, surveying, engineering and development teams in Ontario and across Canada. The following checklist helps us discuss scope before collection.

1. Identify the site and mapping area

Share the site location and approximate area. If available, include a boundary sketch or map showing the area of interest. Explain which parts of the site matter most and whether adjacent terrain needs to be included. A site name alone may leave important boundaries unclear.

2. Explain the intended use

Tell us what the data will support: exploration planning, engineering design, development planning, monitoring or stockpile measurement. Describe the question your team is trying to answer. This helps the conversation focus on useful outputs rather than a generic mapping package.

3. Discuss the required outputs

Point clouds and 3D terrain models can form part of a mapping workflow. Identify the outputs your team expects, the coordinate system, and the software that will receive the data. If these requirements are still being defined, say so. We can discuss them during scoping; file formats and suitability should be agreed before collection.

4. Describe access and site conditions

Include available information about vegetation, terrain, site access and operational restrictions. Identify the person who can coordinate access and share any relevant site instructions. Tell us whether the site is active and whether work must fit around other operations. Collection arrangements need to be assessed for the actual location.

5. Explain accuracy and timing needs

Describe your intended use and any required accuracy or acceptance criteria. Accuracy is assessed for the site and purpose before collection; avoid assuming one accuracy figure applies to every project. Share your preferred timeline and any fixed milestones so availability and scope can be discussed.

Planning a repeat survey or stockpile measurement?

For repeat mapping, include earlier data and explain what changes need to be compared. For stockpiles, identify the piles, measurement boundaries and any available information about the base surface. Discuss these assumptions before comparing measurements. See our stockpile volume measurement service.

What LiDAR terrain mapping can show

LiDAR mapping describes the land surface. It does not directly detect underground mineral veins. Ground visibility depends on vegetation and usable returns, and geological interpretation and field verification remain essential. Our mining terrain mapping service explains the project scope.
